About Heather

Heather is an animal portrait artist based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She has been painting for the past 15 years and her art can be found in homes throughout North America.

Heather’s mentor was her father, Norman Laws. A talented and successful commercial artist, he nurtured her artistic talents and provided unfailing support together with constructive criticism. The value of his mentoring is reflected in the care, precision and authenticity of Heather’s art. Norman Laws is sorely missed, having died early in 2008.

Heather’s love of drawing and painting animals grew and developed during high school and university. Graduation and a job lead to the purchase of her first companion, Maggie, a 2 1/2 year-old dark bay Clydesdale/Thoroughbred mare, with large soulful eyes and an adorable personality to match. Before long, “Jesse”, a year-old jet-black Labrador/Great Dane cross joined their family.

Heather actively launched her career as an animal painter in her picturesque ‘Cabin’ on a horse farm in Tottenham. Maggie and Jesse became her ‘muses’, and Heather spent many months developing a body of work to display at local horse shows and art festivals. More recently, Lola, a happy three-year old black Labrador has joined her family and has managed to fill the void left by the passing of Jesse.

Since 1998, Heather has exhibited her work at numerous shows. She continues to pursue her career and professional development and is currently studying Portraiture in Oil with John Viljoen. Heather resides in Toronto where she is much sought after for her sensitive and insightful animal portraits.
